Choosing a Shopify upload and proof app: 9 questions
Choose a file upload and proof approval app for Shopify by testing how it handles the awkward cases, not the happy path: two lines for the same variant, an order edited after approval, a customer who never uploads, a checkout button that skips the cart. The nine questions below are the ones that separate apps once the demo is over, and each can be answered inside a free trial.
The nine questions
- Does the file attach to the order line, or only to the order? An order with two designs needs two files that stay separate.
- What happens when two lines share a variant? This is where files get swapped. Place a test order with two lines and two different files.
- What does the customer need to do? Ask whether approval requires an account or an install, and whether the link works on a phone.
- Does approval belong to a version? A new version should cancel the old approval instead of stacking on top of it.
- What is checked before production? Look for a step that compares the approved version with the current order and the stored files.
- What are the file limits and formats? Compare them with the files your customers really send. Upproof accepts PNG, JPEG or PDF, up to 20 MiB per file, 5 files and 50 MiB per upload set.
- Which themes and checkout paths are covered? Ask what bypasses the upload: quick-buy, quick-add, cart drawers, accelerated payment buttons.
- Where is customer data stored and for how long? Artwork can contain personal information. Look for a stated retention period and a way to honour deletion requests. Upproof’s answers are on its privacy page.
- How is it priced? Per order, per proof, or per revision behave very differently when customers ask for three rounds of changes. In Upproof one credit covers the first successfully published proof for one order line, and revisions are included. Check the current plans.
A trial script that takes an hour
- Add the upload to one personalized product and save the theme.
- Order it twice in one checkout, same variant, two different files.
- Publish a proof for each line and approve one from a phone.
- Change the quantity on the approved order and see what the app tells you.
- Publish a revised proof and try the old link.
- Place an order without uploading anything and see how the gap is shown.
When an upload app is the wrong tool
- Customers design on the page. If shoppers place text or images on a live preview, you need a product customizer. Upproof handles a finished file and its approval, not on-page design.
- You create every design yourself. If no customer file is involved there is nothing to collect, though a proof step can still help.
- Your storefront bypasses the standard path. If most orders come through quick-buy or a custom checkout, check what the app can do there before you install it.
How the workflow itself should run, whichever app you pick, is covered in a proof approval workflow for custom orders.
Questions
What is the difference between an upload app and a product customizer?
An upload app lets the customer send a finished file, such as artwork, that you then use to make the item. A customizer lets the customer build the design on the page, for example by placing text on a live preview. Upproof is an upload and proof approval app, not an on-page design editor.
Does Upproof charge for revisions?
No. One credit covers the first successfully published proof for one order line. Uploads, failed submissions and revisions use no extra credits.
Which stores does Upproof set up for?
The initial storefront setup supports Online Store 2.0 product pages using the standard product, cart and checkout path. Quick-buy, quick-add and other checkout paths can bypass uploads.
